Still waiting ...
It's 4PM local time here, and the laptop service engineer hasn't yet showed up. A phone call to Compaq's CarePaq center learned me that they will show up between 9AM and 5PM, so I'm getting a bit worried. They couldn't provide me with more information on who was to be expected, nor when, and having read this saga (linked by Tom), I'm not the slightest bit at ease.

These stories make me think that me experiences with Dell were not so bad after all. Their material breaks down quite a lot; but at least they prompty send someone over to repair it on site. Of course the technician often doesn't have the right components or info and has to come back several times. At least, they don't hijack your computer.

Apple was quite pleasant too when my TiBook PSU broke. They just sent me a new one and I had to return the old and broken one through the same courrier service. Failure to do so without 2 weeks will of course make Apple send you an invoice for the new item.
