Cancun 2005!

Once again, I'll be travelling off to Cancun this January for a week. Really looking forward to the warm water and beautiful white beaches already.

This will be my third trip to Cancun, I was there last year in January, and the january before that as well. The hotel I'll be staying in is pictured above, although it's an older photo, there's now a shopping complex behind the hotel where it shows sand above :)

What amazed me the most on my last trip was the colour of the water - it was such a deep and amazing blue that faded into the horizon meeting the clear sky in the background. Even though in January it's winter, the water was still warm.

If only there was a surf swell! :)

There's some photos of the hotel online on my photo gallery - I'll add some more this year once I arrive.

Tropical Islands!

Wow!

A former Zeppelin hangar between Berlin and Dresden has been converted into an indoor beach, becoming Europe's largest indoor recreational facility. The hangar itself is 107m high and 360m in length (!)

Will definitely have to check this out next time I'm nearby.

OS News Windows & Mac

OS News is running an interesting article about a Windows user who recently started using Mac.

Quite funny:

"...You can imagine how strange I felt when I started to look at the Mac differently. It's like seeing a girl you made fun of in school and now she is hot 10 years later..."

hehe :)

J2SE 6.0 Mustang snapshots!

Sun has started making snapshots of the next Java release available, codenamed 'Mustang'.

With Sun increasingly immitating the ideals of open source (eg. check the FAQ especially, #4, #5 and #8) with each Java release, they might as well make that last step :)

Well, it's almost that time of the year again, so before it's all over, I'd just like to take the time to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

All the best everyone, we'll see you on the other side! :)

Groovy in Debian!

This morning I finished the first cut of a Groovy package for Debian. It's been uploaded to the incoming package queue, and should be making it's way into the Debian archive over the next few days!

For anyone that wants it straight away it's available from my Debian homepage.

If anyone has any suggestions, enhancements, etc, to the package please feel free to let me know :)

Java libraries!

Michael listed some of the java libraries we've been using recently, it's awesome being able to glue together so many different reusable components to common solutions, and not have to focus on reinventing the wheel.

...and, just glancing over the 516 (!) projects available via the ibiblio maven repository I can see there's quite a few more goodies we haven't yet discovered!

plugdev!

Gnome 2.8 supports automounting/playing of DVD/CD's, memory sticks, even cameras, however since my upgrade from Gnome 2.6 to Gnome 2.8 I was never able to get this to work properly.

In Gnome 2.6 there was a package called magicdev that did the work, in Gnome 2.8 this is replaced by gnome-volume-manager, hal, amongst others.

But yesterday I finally got it working, thanks to a hint on the debian-gtk-gnome list. Turns out your user account needs to be in the plugdev group for this magic to work.

$> sudo adduser crafterm plugdev

and viola it all started working. :)
