Bluetooth under Linux!

On the weekend I bought a Bluetooth Mouse to use with my notebook that has an internal Bluetooth adaptor. It was great to see it working under Linux in no time at all after taking a look at the following page.

Bluetooth looks like a really great technology for peripheral devices, etc. There's also two implementations available for Linux, BlueZ and Affix which both seem to be quite advanced.

Next I'm going to have to get a Linux compatible 802.11b/g Mini-PCI card with a base station too! Then I'll be completely wireless :)

The end of Netscape?

Quote from Mozillazine "...AOL has cut or will cut the remaining team working on Mozilla in a mass firing and are dismantling what was left of Netscape...". Original article here.

Definitely a sad ending for a company that revolutionalized the industry and effectively help bring the Internet/WWW into the mainstream.

Reminds me of when I read about the rise and fall of Netscape in "The Silicon Boys, and their Valley of Dreams". Quite an interesting and insightful read, especially the targetting of Netscape by it's primary competitor.

Also found this, a diary of people who've left Netscape and where they are now!

Ping requires root :)

Was browsing through the source code to the well known Ping utility last night (I know, I'm such a romantic aren't I :) ), and actually discovered that it requires root privileges because it creates an raw ICMP socket to send/receive  ECHO/ECHO_REQUEST packets.

This made me bring out the old Stevens and Comer books from University which had me reading for hours about sockets, protocols, RFC's, and not to mention looking at some lovely C code. It was quite a trip down memory lane when I was studying all this in 3rd year :)

For those who ever wanted to see how Ping works, here's the source!

Java & Gnome!

Several efforts are out there attempting to marry Java and Gnome which is quite an interesting topic.

SWT is a brand new implementation of a Java GUI that uses native bindings to draw it's widgets. It's available on most platforms including Linux (GTK2 and Motif), Windows, MacOS, to name a few. It's also the GUI behind Eclipse, the Java IDE.

Java-GNOME is another effort to allow Gnome applications to be written in Java. It supports both GTK and GNOME bindings.

On top of this with the latest release of JDK 1.4.2, there's GTK Look and Feel support.

Will be interesting to see where it all goes :)

More People Choose Linux!

It seems Linux is increasingly being chosen for the desktop over Windows. In May the Munich Government decided to migrate 14,000 desktops to Linux. Last Month the Spanish Government announced that it would put 80,000 Linux/Gnome desktops across the country for educational purposes in schools, and only last week the Australian Government had a bit of a shakedown over it's IT budget spending.

Update, looks like Australian Government is still being shaken up by the use of Open Source :)
