Looking forward to giving this a try when I get back to Australia next time, and giving it a try at one of my old surf spots (such as Browns Beach, a really casual beach break near my home town of Mount Gambier, above)!

Great link. I did some searching and it seems to me that you could use the blue Dow building insulation [which is available at any large hardware store in the US, where I live] to make your own blank, based on the page at the bottom which gives densities around the 2 lbs/ft^3 Surfer Steve recomends. Though you'd might have to glue several pieces together to get enough thickness, and put a stringer in the middle. I want to say a one part polyurethane glue whould be good [cheap, strong, waterproof] to glue pieces of foam together but I have no idea if it would react with the epoxy. I haven't priced it so I don't know if it makes economic sense, but might be a good option if you are having trouble finding foam.
